Cloud Firm’s Data Shows Multicloud ‘Current Reality” ParkMyCloud, a cloud cost optimization specialist, has discovered interesting trends in its ecosystem over the past year, including a rise in multi-cloud implementations. This data is consistent with other findings from this year such as the “RightScale 2019 Cloud Report by Flexera”, which declared “multi-cloud the strategy of choice” for enterprises, and Constellation Research which discussed the need for enterprise tools “as multi-cloud becomes a reality.” ParkMyCloud, which analyzed data from its platform, which is reportedly used in more than 1,100 organizations across more than 50 countries, found these interesting cloud-usage trends in the past 12 months. This clearly indicates a shift to multi-cloud environments and cuts into Amazon Web Services (AWS’) dominance.

  • ParkMyCloud customers now use both Azure and Google Cloud together. This is a new phenomenon — we have previously seen customers using both AWS and Azure together.
  • Every large enterprise that used AWS exclusively 2 years ago now has Azure resources. This data point is combined with the previous data point to show how multi-cloud really is the current reality.
  • The ParkMyCloud platform now has more Google Cloud projects than Azure subscriptions. However, there are more Azure resources than Google resources.
  • Over 600 percent has been achieved in the platform’s resource count over the past year. This is due to organic growth and new customers. However, we have seen a significant increase in the use scale groups and analytics workloads. This is an effect of greater elasticity.

Other observations from customer feedback and usage data revealed a trend of “rightsizing” and an interest in “containers and serverless, and other advanced PaaS offerings that users would prefer to manage, in addition to the main culprit of cloud wasted, oversized, and idle resources. These observations were described in a blog post published July 2.
