The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), which was introduced in 2003, has opened up a new career path for nearly 27,000 people in project management. This entry-level certification is based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge. It demonstrates your ability to work in a project team and has demonstrable knowledge of best practices in project management.
There has never been a greater demand for project management skills at work. A 2015 survey found that there were 2,348,8330 job openings in project management in the United States between 2010 and 2020. This is in addition to an expected 12% increase in global demand for project managers. A CAPM certificate will give you an advantage in a job market where a bachelor’s degree is expected.
To become CAPM-certified you don’t have to have any project management experience. All you need is a commitment to your career and the willingness to learn. You need to have certain skills to be a good project manager. However, the most important skill is the desire to lead others and drive success. Employers will hire people who are interested in being project managers and not those who see it as a way to get to other jobs.
Candidates must hold a secondary diploma, which can be a high school education or global equivalent, and have at least 1,500 hours of experience or 23 hours in project management education to be eligible for CAPM certification. The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification requires between 4,500 to 7,500 hours leading and managing projects. This depends on whether the candidate has a secondary diploma or a four year degree. However, the 1,500 hours required for CAPM can be done as part of a project team. This certification can be used in almost any workplace.
It is widely believed that the CAPM exam is easier than the PMP exam as an introductory qualification. The exam lasts 3 hours and has 150 multiple-choice questions. The CAPM exam, as mentioned previously, is based on only PMBOK(tm) knowledge. The PMP exam, on the other hand, tests what candidates know from their project management experience and their understanding of PMBOK ™.
The CAPM certification is a great gateway to the PMP qualification, as both qualifications require the same framework. If you are interested in taking the PMP exam, the CAPM certification will give you the experience you need to study for a professional certification.
